Most intelligent animals share a body plan with us: a spine, a centralised brain, limbs that move roughly the way ours do. Octopuses share almost none of that, and that is exactly why they are so interesting.
Two-thirds of an octopus’s neurons sit in its arms, not its brain. Each arm can taste, problem-solve and react semi-independently, which raises an odd question biologists still argue about: where does an octopus’s mind actually live?
Add a nervous system that evolved entirely separately from ours for over 500 million years, and you get intelligence that looks familiar (curiosity, play, problem-solving) built on hardware that looks nothing like ours. That is the closest thing biology offers to studying an alien mind, without leaving the planet.
