The Weight of Salt
A fisherman's daughter counts what the tide takes, and what it leaves behind.
Sample brief: Original short fiction sample.
Her father kept two ledgers. One for the catch, one for the debts. She was the only one who knew he kept a third, in his head, for everything the sea had taken from their family that no scale could weigh.
Salt worked its way into everything on the coast: the wood of the boats, the cracks in their hands, the words that went unsaid at dinner because saying them felt like inviting the tide to take one more thing.
Tonight she counted nets instead of words, because nets were honest. A net either came back full or it didn’t, and either way, it came back.
